Storm & Hail Damage Roof Repair
Storm Damage Restoration Across Utah County
Utah County sits in the path of the late-spring and summer storm cells that roll off the Wasatch Front every year. A single afternoon of hail or a downslope wind event can strip shingles, bruise the roof surface, and dent gutters and flashing across an entire neighborhood — often without producing a leak that day.
That delay is what catches homeowners out. Hail knocks the protective granules off asphalt shingles and breaks the seal strips that hold each course down. The roof still sheds water for a while. Then the first heavy snowmelt or driving rain finds the compromised area, and what began as a covered storm loss has become months of slow water intrusion.
Phoenix Exteriors inspects, documents, and restores storm-damaged roofs throughout Provo, Orem, Lehi, and the surrounding Utah County communities. The inspection and written damage report are free, and you get a straight answer about whether you have a claim worth filing.

Signs of Storm Damage on a Utah Roof
Most storm damage is invisible from the driveway. These are the indicators our inspectors document — and the ones adjusters look for.
Granule Loss in Gutters
Hail strikes knock the mineral granules off the shingle surface. Heavy accumulation in gutters or at downspout outlets after a storm is one of the most reliable early signals that the roof took impact.
Bruised or Pitted Shingles
A hail bruise is a soft, dark circle where granules were displaced and the mat beneath was compressed. It may not be torn open, but the shingle has lost its UV protection and will deteriorate quickly from that point on.
Dented Metal Surfaces
Gutters, downspouts, roof vents, valley metal, and flashing are all soft enough to record hail impacts clearly. Dents on these surfaces establish that hail of a damaging size actually hit your property.
Lifted or Creased Shingles
High winds fold shingles back and break the seal strip underneath. Even when the shingle falls back into place, the crease line and broken seal mean it will lift again in the next wind event.
Missing Shingles
Shingles fully stripped from the roof leave the underlayment directly exposed to weather. This is the most visible form of wind damage and usually the most urgent to address.
Damaged Ridge Cap
The ridge is the most wind-exposed line on any roof. Cracked, lifted, or missing ridge cap shingles open the peak of the roof system, where water intrusion spreads fastest across the decking.
Torn or Displaced Flashing
Wind lifts step flashing along dormers and walls, and pulls counter-flashing away from chimneys. These openings sit at exactly the intersections where water already concentrates.
Collateral Property Damage
Dented siding, torn window screens, damaged fascia, split fence rails, and shredded landscaping all corroborate the severity of the storm and belong in a properly documented claim.
Interior Water Staining
Fresh ceiling or wall discoloration following a storm confirms the roof envelope has already been breached. At this stage the damage is spreading into insulation and decking with every subsequent rain.

What Happens After You Call
Storm work moves in a specific order. Getting the documentation right at the start is what determines whether the claim covers the whole job.
- 01
Free Storm Damage Inspection
A project manager inspects every roof plane, the gutters and soft metals, and the siding and windows where wind-driven hail tends to leave evidence. If there is an active leak, we trace where the water is getting in so it can be prioritized in the repair.
- 02
Photo Documentation & Written Report
Every deficiency is photographed and logged by roof plane and elevation. You receive a written report at no charge — the same documentation that supports a claim, whether or not you file one.
- 03
Honest Claim Assessment
We tell you plainly whether the damage rises to the level of a claim. If it does not, we say so — filing a claim that gets denied on a roof with no storm damage does you no favors with your carrier.
- 04
Filing & Adjuster Meeting
If you choose to file, we help you open the claim and meet your adjuster on site. Being on the roof together means the scope reflects everything that was damaged rather than only what was visible on a quick pass.
- 05
Repair or Replacement
Isolated wind damage gets repaired. Widespread hail impact gets a full replacement. Either way the crew, the materials, and the standards are the same ones we bring to every job — storm work is not a lesser tier of service.
- 06
Cleanup, Documentation & Warranty
We clear debris, run magnetic rollers across the property for nails, and provide completion photos for your records and your carrier. All work carries our written workmanship warranty.
Storm Damage Is an Insurance Question
Sudden storm events are exactly what homeowner's insurance exists to cover. Wear, aging, and deferred maintenance are not. The line between them is where most claims are won or lost — and it is decided by how well the damage is documented before the adjuster arrives.
We handle that side of the job as its own service: filing, adjuster meetings, supplements when the initial scope misses damage, code-upgrade coverage, and the difference between actual cash value and replacement cost on your policy.
Before You Sign Anything
Storms bring out-of-state crews into Utah County within days. A few things worth knowing before you hand anyone a signature:
- Verify the contractor is licensed and insured in Utah
- Never sign a contingency agreement you haven't read in full
- Be wary of anyone pressuring you to decide the same day
- Ask who is actually on the roof — crew or subcontractor
- Confirm the workmanship warranty is written, not verbal

Honest Damage Assessment

Storm Damage FAQ
How do I know if my roof has hail damage?
- Hail damage is often invisible from the ground. The reliable indicators are granule loss collecting in gutters, dark bruised spots where granules were knocked off the shingle, and dents on soft metals like gutters, vents, and flashing. Because a hail-damaged roof can still shed water for months, a roof-level inspection is the only way to know for certain.
How long do I have to file a storm damage claim in Utah?
- Most Utah homeowner policies require a claim within one year of the date of loss, and some allow two. The clock runs from the storm date — not from when you noticed the damage — so a spring hailstorm you discover the following winter may already be near the deadline. Check your policy and get the roof inspected as soon as you suspect an issue.
Does storm damage always mean a full replacement?
- No. Isolated wind damage — a few missing shingles, damaged ridge cap, lifted flashing — is normally a repair. Widespread hail impact across multiple roof planes usually warrants replacement, because the shingle surface has been compromised everywhere at once. We give you an honest assessment and never push a replacement when a repair solves the problem.
Will filing a claim raise my premium?
- Weather-related claims are generally treated differently from liability or at-fault claims, and in many cases a single storm claim does not raise an individual premium. That said, carriers set their own rules and rate changes after widespread hail events are common region-wide. Your agent can tell you how your specific carrier handles it.
What if my claim was denied?
- A denial is not always the end of it. Adjusters occasionally miss damage on a quick inspection, or scope only part of the roof. If our inspection documents damage the denial did not account for, we can help you request a re-inspection with that evidence in hand.
What should I do immediately after a storm?
- Stay off the roof. From the ground, photograph anything visible — shingles in the yard, dented gutters, damaged screens or siding. If water is coming in, contain it and move belongings clear. Then schedule an inspection. Don't sign with a door-knocking contractor before the roof has been independently assessed.
Is the inspection really free?
- Yes — free and no-obligation anywhere in our Utah County service area. You get the written report whether or not you file a claim or hire us for the work.
