Metal Roofing in Utah County

Standing Seam & Metal Panels

Metal Roofs Built for Utah Winters

Thinking about a metal roof in Utah? Phoenix Exteriors is a Provo-based roofing contractor that installs standing-seam metal and metal panel roofs across Utah County and the south end of the Salt Lake Valley. Metal lasts 50 years or more and sheds snow, but it costs two to three times as much as asphalt. We'll tell you plainly whether it makes sense for your home.

Every metal roof we install starts the same way as any Phoenix replacement: a full tear-off, an inspection of every sheet of decking, ice-and-water shield at the eaves and valleys, and synthetic underlayment across the field. The metal is only as good as what's underneath it.

Metal or Asphalt? The Short Answer

Metal wins when…
You'll own the home 15+ years, you live higher on the bench or in the foothills where snow sits longer, or you want a roof you won't think about again.
Asphalt wins when…
You may sell within about eight years, the budget is tight, or you're in a neighborhood where metal would stand out. A Class 4 impact-resistant shingle is the middle ground for hail.
Either way…
We'll price both on the same written estimate so you can compare. The full breakdown is in asphalt vs. metal roofing in Utah.
What We Install

Metal Roofing Systems

Two families of residential metal roofing, each suited to a different look and budget.

Longest Life

Standing-Seam Metal

Long vertical panels joined by raised seams, with the fasteners hidden under the seam instead of driven through the face of the panel. Clean, modern lines, excellent snow shedding, and a service life of 50 years or more.

Best for: long-term owners, steeper roofs, foothill and bench homes.

Metal Shingles & Panels

Steel and aluminum systems formed to look like asphalt shingles or wood shake, so the roof fits a traditional neighborhood while keeping metal's longevity.

Best for: homes where standing seam would look out of place, and HOAs that want a shingle profile.

How Metal Handles Utah Weather

Metal isn't better at everything. Here's how it actually performs against what Utah throws at a roof.

  • Snow

Snow slides off instead of sitting and melting, which sharply cuts ice damming. The trade-off is slabs of snow coming off at once, so snow guards belong over doors, walkways, driveways and lower roofs.

  • Hail

Large hail can dent panels, but a standing-seam roof rarely fails from it. Damage is usually cosmetic. Steel dents less than aluminum.

  • Sun & UV

PVDF (Kynar 500) finishes resist fading for decades at Utah's elevation, where asphalt shingles lose granules and age faster.

  • Wind

A properly installed standing-seam roof is very hard for wind to lift, where shingles tend to lift and tear at the edges first. Edge and ridge details are where wind resistance is won or lost.

  • Freeze-Thaw

The panels themselves aren't damaged by freeze-thaw cycling. Flashing and trim details are what matter, which is why they get as much attention as the panels.

  • Fire

Steel is noncombustible, a real advantage for homes near the foothills and canyon mouths.

How It Works

Our Metal Roof Installation Process

  1. 01

    Free Inspection & Estimate

We inspect and measure the roof, talk through how long you plan to stay, and give you a written estimate. Ask for asphalt and metal side by side and we'll price both.

  2. 02

    System & Color Selection

We walk you through standing seam versus metal shingles, colors and finishes, and any HOA requirements.

  3. 03

    Permits & Scheduling

We pull the permits your city requires and schedule the install once materials are ready.

  4. 04

    Tear-Off & Deck Inspection

The old roof comes off down to the decking. Every sheet is checked for rot and soft spots, and damaged decking is replaced before anything new goes on.

  5. 05

    Underlayment & Waterproofing

Ice-and-water shield at the eaves, valleys and penetrations, then synthetic underlayment across the rest of the roof.

  6. 06

    Panels, Flashing & Trim

Panels, ridge, flashing around chimneys and vents, and edge trim are installed to the manufacturer's specifications, with snow guards planned where sliding snow could do damage.

  7. 07

    Final Walk-Through & Warranty

We walk the finished roof with you, clean up the site, and hand over your lifetime workmanship warranty and the manufacturer's warranty paperwork.

Common Questions

Metal Roofing FAQ

Is a metal roof worth it in Utah?

Usually, if you plan to stay in the home 15 years or more. A standing-seam metal roof can last 50 years or longer, sheds snow, and holds up to Utah's high-elevation sun. It costs roughly two to three times as much to install as asphalt, so if you expect to sell within about eight years, asphalt or a Class 4 impact-resistant shingle is usually the better value.

How long does a metal roof last?

Standing-seam metal commonly lasts 50 years or more, roughly twice the realistic life of architectural asphalt in Utah conditions. Painted finishes with a PVDF (Kynar 500) coating resist fading for decades, which matters at Utah's elevation and UV levels.

How much does a metal roof cost compared to asphalt?

Metal typically costs two to three times as much to install as architectural asphalt. The exact number depends on the system, roof size, pitch, and how many penetrations and valleys the roof has. We give you a written, itemized estimate at no charge, with asphalt and metal options side by side if you want to compare. Our Utah roof replacement cost guide covers typical market ranges.

Will hail dent a metal roof?

Large hail, around 1.5 inches and up, can dent metal panels, but a properly installed standing-seam roof rarely leaks from hail. The damage is usually cosmetic. Steel resists denting better than aluminum. If hail is your main concern and budget matters, a Class 4 impact-resistant shingle is a strong alternative.

Does snow slide off a metal roof?

Yes, and that cuts both ways. Metal sheds snow well, which sharply reduces ice damming, but snow can come off in heavy slabs. Plan for snow guards over entries, walkways, driveways, decks and lower roofs so the snow releases gradually instead of all at once.

Is a metal roof loud when it rains or hails?

Not in a finished home. With solid decking, underlayment and an insulated attic, rain on a metal roof sounds much like rain on shingles. The loud metal roof people remember is usually on a barn or carport with no ceiling underneath.

What warranty comes with a metal roof?

Every Phoenix Exteriors installation includes our lifetime workmanship warranty. The panels and paint finish carry the manufacturer's own warranty, which varies by product. We walk you through both before you sign.
